Year of the Tiger | St. Vincent (Strange Mercy, 2011)
Largely considered one of the best albums of 2011, Strange Mercy offers an almost other-worldly escape to the soft, somewhat hysterical and incredibly beautiful land of Annie Clark. I chose to share Year of the Tiger because, firstly, I have not heard it on the radio yet (unliked Cruel, and Strange Mercy, which are also amazing) so it is more likely to be new to at least some of you. Secondly, I think it is incredibly relevant. The lyrics are an outcry about the economic downfall in America, but as I listen to Clark sing-yell “Oh America, can I owe you one?”, all I can think is how glad I am that America exists and that it helped shape her as an artist. Thanks Dallas!!
